A Historic Course
The Hyde Park Golf Course has a storied past coupled with originality, renovations and expansion.
Founded by Frank A. Dudley in 1901, the course was designed by William F. and David W. Gordon, starting with only a nine-hole course, known today as the Red-Nine.
It was originally named Niagara Falls Country Club before members began searching for a new location. And in 1916 they found it, moving to the Town of Lewiston where the original nine-hole golf course remained.
The new and improved club opened on June 1, 1919 with Alfred “Alf” Campbell as the club’s first head professional.
In the 1920’s the City added a new 18-hole course to be played in conjunction with the original Red-Nine. This course is fondly remembered by our senior golfers as the “old course.”
In 1931, Alf invited a couple of his professional golfer friends to visit and it was none other than Walter Hagen and Tommy Armour. They played an exhibition match with Mr. Campbell, much to the delight of local golfers.
In 1938, the area surrounding the golf course was developed by the Hyde family into what is now known as Hyde Park, a beloved public recreation facility.
Around 1950, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) approached the City with a request to construct huge water conduits from the upper Niagara River to their massive viaduct in Lewiston.
In return for the property provided by the City, the NYPA promised to construct a new 18-hole course coupled with a beautiful clubhouse and restaurant to match.
Their work resulted in a total of 36 golf holes, consisting of the original Red-Nine course, the White-Nine course and the newly constructed North 18-hole course.
While the Red-Nine remained untouched, some of the original “old course” holes are still in play on the white-nine and the North 18.
Over the past half-century, the City has maintained these courses to the best of their ability. As time has passed and economic conditions worsened for the City of Niagara Falls, the due diligence owed to the golf course has dropped off.
The New Hyde Park Golf Course
In 2018 the City issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) that allowed golf-oriented businesses to openly bid on operating the property, while at the same time, providing the City with some much-needed financial relief.
In the spring of 2019, the City selected and contracted with Niagara Golf Partners LLC (NGP) led by local businessman, Rick Horn to operate the course and restaurant.
NGP was selected not only because of their business profile, but because of the commitment they made to make course maintenance their number one priority.
We invite everyone to come visit us, play a round of golf, enjoy a great meal, and have a wonderful day at the new Hyde Park Golf Course.
Thank you!
